Thermal imaging

In computer vision systems, the ability to automatically capture human movement can be used for a variety of purposes including security and safety systems and gesture based computer interfaces.  In order to improve the robustness and accuracy of human movement and behaviour monitoring, a high precision thermal camera can be used alongside a high-resolution visible camera.  Combining the two compensates for the weaknesses of each imaging technology.

The video below shows the use of an automated foreground extraction algorithm, using a thermal camera as an input to separate the regions containing people from the background.
