Brackenhurst Veterinary Nursing Centre

Following significant investment of £1.5 million, the Veterinary Nursing Centre was opened in July 2008 by His Royal Highness The Earl of Wessex.

Based at our Brackenhurst campus, the centre is a purpose-built simulated veterinary practice, giving FdSc Veterinary Nursing students a real-life feel to their studies. The FdSc Veterinary Nursing course has been accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), who described the facility as state-of-the-art.

The centre houses a simulated practice, which allows hands-on experience in a safe environment along with classroom facilities for theory. Students train on a variety of equipment; such as biochemistry and haematology machines, autoclaves and anaesthetic machines. Students also complete various work placements over 70 weeks during the course, which develops their employment skills and gives the opportunity to use the skills learnt in a veterinary practice.

The centre replicates a modern working veterinary practice with the following facilities:

  • Reception area for appointment handling and providing over-the-counter-advice
  • Dispensary
  • Consultation room
  • X-ray
  • Laboratory
  • Hospital
  • Preparation area
  • Theatre

The centre saw its first cohort of students complete their final RCVS written and practical exams this year to become fully qualified Veterinary Nurses. The School or Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences has an established track record of applied research contracts with industry and commercial bodies and provides a range of taught courses and research degrees.
