Garry Smith started his career in industry as a management trainee with Trebor Ltd at their Chesterfield factory following a short period as a Police Officer in the Derbyshire Constabulary. After spending five years in various production management and industrial engineering roles, he joined the Trebor marketing department in London and gained his first experience of TV advertising as Brand Manager for Trebor Mints.
In 1986, Garry joined Northern Foods plc as Senior Brand Manager at Pork Farms in Nottingham. He was promoted to Marketing Manager in 1987 and on to the Senior Management Team as Marketing Controller in 1988.
In 1991, Garry was appointed Marketing Controller for Bowyers in Wiltshire. He was responsible for the rationalisation of Pork Farms and Bowyers brands when they were merged by Northern Foods in 1994 and gained marketing responsibility for the combined brands - first as Marketing Controller and then joining the board of Pork Farms Bowyers as Marketing Director in 1995.
In 1998, Garry Smith was seconded by Northern Foods to be General Manager of Trafford Park Bakery with full profit responsibility for the business which employed 400 people and had a turnover of £25 million. He returned to the £120m Pork Farms Bowyers business as Sales and Marketing Director in 1999 where he combined the Sales and Marketing functions and introduced 'category management'.
In 2003, Garry became Managing Director of a national food service business, before setting up his own consultancy company, Dextra Management Services Ltd, in 2004.
In 2007, Garry Smith was appointed as Commercial Director for Nottingham Trent University.
