Jim Carter
Co-opted Member of the Audit and Risk Management Committee
Jim Carter is a director at East Midlands law firm Nelsons, where he is head of the firm's Commerce and Technology Group. Jim joined Nelsons on qualification in October 1984, a year after the firm was formed, became a partner in 1987 and a director when the firm incorporated in 2010.
Jim's areas of legal expertise include technology contracts, intellectual property, data protection, projects and information technology contracts, including acting for spin-out companies from local universities.
Jim has also served on the Nelson's board of management in the past, completing his latest period of office in 2009.
Before qualifying as a solicitor, Jim studied at Nottingham Trent Polytechnic (as it was then) to complete his Law Society's Finals course.
Jim graduated in law from the University of Birmingham in 1977, then went on to postgraduate studies at Edinburgh University, before returning to the University of Birmingham for a three year stint as a lecturer in the Law Faculty. His duties included a 50% commitment to undertaking research at the University's Institute of Judicial Administration and he co-authored and managed an SSRC funded research project into duty solicitor schemes, with the approval and recognition of the Home Office, the Lord Chancellor's Department and the Law Society.
Jim is a keen skier and Forest fan and lives in Nottinghamshire with his wife and two daughters.
