About the unit

Girl playing Floor Lacrosse

Project Adapted arose out of the need for practical guidance for teacher training students on a specialist course to teach the learning disabled in the mid 1970s at Nottingham Trent University.

The Adapted Physical Activities Unit was established in 1991. Its purpose is to integrate and expand the well established tradition of initiatives developed and conducted by NTU’s School of Education relating to adapted physical activities.

The adapting technique

The technique of adapting a sport for people with severe physical and mental impairments.

Adapting refers to the practical obstacles - not physical access/attitudes etc - concerning the positive involvement of an individual or group in an actual activity, game or sport in which both the challenge perspective and their dignity is preserved.
