The architecture staff team and the School as a whole, are closely engaged with the architectural profession.

These connections are established for students as soon as they arrive - the School has close ties with local and national organisations through work placements, guest speakers and tutors, industrial liaison groups, live projects, research and consultancy.

Live projects and briefs

Many companies provide real, life briefs for students to work on - see 'Project and awards' tab for more details about these.
These live projects enable students to understand how a design practice operates and give an insight into the challenges they will be working to.

Accreditation

  • Our BArch (Hons) Architecture course is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and has full Architects Registration Board (ARB) prescription.
  • The MArch Architecture course is validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects  (RIBA)to provide exemption from the part two examinations (subject to final ratification).

    We are currently applying for Architects Registration Board (ARB) Prescription.
  • Our BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB):

    Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT)
    The course has full CIAT accreditation and is a Centre of Excellence in the teaching of Architectural Technology.
    "CIAT accreditation demonstrates that a university's Architectural Technology Honours degree programme has been assessed in terms of content, structure and resources. It also provides assurances that students will be able to develop their academic, analytical, communication and employability skills. The accreditation allows certain exemptions when progressing to Chartered Membership of CIAT."

    During a recent accreditation review CIAT complimented the University of on it's facilities including the studios and materials testing laboratories. It also congratulated us on our excellent research activity.

    Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
    During a recent accreditation review the CIOB listed five examples of best practice:
  • Our approach to sustainability and health and safety.
  • Part-time and sandwich placement opportunities.
  • The support we provide to students prior to and during their industrial placement.
  • The quality of some of our provision on our Virtual Learning Portal.
  • Support and enthusiasm towards the School by our students, alumni and industry was stated as 'excellent'.

Guest lecturers

Prominent industry professionals regularly contribute to our lectures offering industry insight.

We have recently appointed five visiting professors and one visiting fellow to the subject area who bring a rich seam of different views and perspectives.

They include:

Professor Julian Marsh – An architect with extensive experience in sustainability and academic advisory work with architectural schools in the region. Lead professional for Nottingham's O-zone lottery fund bid for the Meadows area. Prize winning design for the DH Lawrence Pavilion at The University of Nottingham.

Professor Peter Bishop – Ex-chief planning officer for four London boroughs and currently Director of Design for London reporting to the Mayor. Its objectives are to establish effective design advice and support across Greater London and in doing so improve the quality of urban design, architecture and sustainable development.

Professor Glenn Howells - West Midlands practicing architect and numerous prize winner. Board member of BDI (Birmingham Design Initiative), chair of MADE (Midlands Art Design and Environment), member CABE 2012 Olympic Design Review, design advisor Sheffield City Council and urban design advisor Bradford Centre Regeneration.

Professor Sam Allwinkle – Architectural Technologist and currently Director of Lifelong Learning at Napier University. He has been Professor and Director of Research in Built Environment and chair of the Research Committee for the Council of Professors of Building Engineering Management.

Professor John Pike (OBE) – A civil engineer who has taken a small local practice to regional scale and more latterly sold on to an international based consultancy. Wide range of projects from the design of more sustainable foundations for new housing to the facades of the new Arsenal Football Stadium. John has also had a long career in academia.

Dr Stuart Mucklejohn - A Visiting Fellow (shared with Product Design). A chemist by background, Stuart is a lighting expert both in the scientific sense, but also in an applied sense especially in the context of urban lighting. He also has a wider commitment and interests in sustainability.

We will continue to add to this list creating a dynamic and impressive virtual faculty.
