Our construction staff are very active in the local and national construction field enjoying close working links with professional bodies and construction organisations through work placements, part-time practice-based tutors, guest speakers, industrial liaison groups, live projects and research and consultancy activities.

Hands-on experience

We work closely with industry to ensure our courses are relevant and current.

With the support of construction companies we are able to introduce students to the real world of construction early on – taking them on regular site-visits.

Students also get involved in live projects. The final year Integrated Project is designed to bring the four years of study to a conclusion. The project over the last few years has been set by Willmott Dixon and is a live construction project.

The company is involved in the project throughout, attending presentations, providing feedback, judging the projects and presenting awards.

Many of our staff sit on boards of local organisations and professional bodies including:

  • CIOB: Former Chairman of CIOB East Midlands
  • RICS: regional board members of RICS East Midlands.

The MSc Project Management (Construction) is recognised by the CIArb as providing an exemption to the Institutes own educational requirements.

Guest Lecturers

Prominent industry figures who are key figures in their areas, regularly contribute to our lecture programme sharing their expertise, guidance and advice. Recent guest speakers have included:

  • Polly Begy, Morgan Sindall - spoke to 2nd year students on matters of Health and Safety
  • Jackie Spurr, AMEC - spoke to 2nd year students on Waste Management / Sustainability issues
  • Mike Connell and Graham Parnell, Civil Marine - who came to talk with 2nd year students on concrete and the additives used in the mixing of it
  • Mark Williams and Chris Fitton, Van Elle - spoke to 2nd year students about piling and foundations.

We regularly attend industry events, including RICS and CIOB events and the East Midlands Property Show.

Property and Construction recruitment fair
