What do you like most about Nottingham Trent University?
The location of NTU was the initial appeal to me but after going to an open day I saw how much support there is for students. I have received lots of advice from the staff on my course and also from other students at the University in the form of the student union. There are lots of sports groups and social groups at NTU which makes it really diverse but at the same time also brings a lot of students together who perhaps wouldn't talk to each other normally.
Tell us about your placement experience and things you have been doing/skills learned?
I have learned so much on my placement so far, it really has been an invaluable experience. I started out in the Nottingham office working with the Estimating team where I checked sub-contractor quotes and prices and checked drawings supplied for different projects by the structural engineer and architects. After a couple of months I started on site at Victoria Retail Park in Colwick, Nottingham where the project was a refurbishment of an old Focus store into a new Tesco Home plus store. I was responsible for the weekly plant checks, ensuring everybody had the correct equipment, issuing instructions, watching over the sub-contractors and learning about what they were doing, and checking the quality of the works e.g. brickwork, steelwork.
Has the placement experience helped you make a decision regarding your future career?
The placement experience has set me up to get a realistic understanding of how building sites work and has made me decide that I definitely want a career in the construction industry. I want to continue my training with Morgan Ashurst and become a Site Manager and eventually become a Project Manager.
