Sarah Parker
BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying
Placement company: Laing O'Rourke
Position: Trainee Quantity Surveyor

What are you enjoying most about your course?
The thing that I enjoy most about my course is that there is a choice of modules and learning styles to suit everyone. In any one module the way in which you are tested can vary from being purely coursework to an exam or laboratory session which tests your practical skills. The strengths that the course holds is the possibility of taking a placement year where you can put your knowledge into action.

What was your role on your placement? What jobs did it involve?
My placement year was taken with my sponsoring company Laing O’Rourke on Ashbourne Health Campus. My role was acting as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor. The main activities that I undertook were taking off and measuring packages and then comparing tenders once these had been received. After placing an order I would carry out valuations and payments for these packages.

What was the highlight of your placement?
The highlights of my placement was being thrown in the deep end, and taking a step into the unknown world of having a full time job with responsibilities. I enjoyed having my own packages and subcontractors to deal with and manage. The placement year built up my confidence and made me realise how much I have learnt so far during my years at university. My placement year has confirmed to me that I have made the right career choice and has made me more determined to become a chartered surveyor
