Liam Beatty
BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying and Construction Commercial Management (part-time)
Company: Gleeds
Position: Trainee Quantity Surveyor

What do you think the benefits of studying a part-time course are for you as an individual?
Studying part-time has benefited me as an individual. By gaining both theory from university and real experience in the workplace I believe that I have learnt much more than if I had just studied part-time. A major benefit to me personally is also that I will come out of university without any debts, whilst also getting paid during my studies.

What support do you get from your company (financial or otherwise)?
All of my course fees are paid by my employer, whilst I also get a salary. This is useful for me because I am getting the benefit of both class and work based learning and earning money at the same time. I also won't have any debts after I graduate, which is a big positive.

As Gleeds is a big company with a number of people that have already completed degrees, including many who are former students of NTU, I get a lot of support from my colleagues which is very useful.

How do you think / hope this degree will boost your career progression after you've graduated?
After I graduate I will continue to work for Gleeds. As they are an international company, with my degree i will be given the opportunity to work at one of our overseas offices such as New York or Perth. In that respect my degree will open up a number of new doors and opportunities for me. I will also aim to complete my APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) within two years after finishing my degree in order to become a member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). This will give me a recognised professional qualification which will increase my status to a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and boost my prospects even further.
