What have been the main challenges for you, studying on a part-time day release course – personally, professionally and academically?
Studying at degree level at university whilst working full time is demanding, you have to be good at time management and prioritising. Over time, with work and university it became natural to prioritise coursework to meet deadlines. I do find the workload to be very intense whilst working and it was challenge to juggle both work and studying with a social life, although as a 22 year old I still manage to find time to socialise, whilst getting my coursework in on time. Academically, I'd never had any experience with construction other than a few months working at CLoSE UK prior to my first year, however the lecturers and staff have always been helpful, thorough and answered any queries, which makes it easier to handle.

Have you found that your studies are supporting you in the workplace? If so are you able to give an example of this?
Whilst continuing with my studies at NTU is that I am utilising the knowledge I learn in my day to day life, which helps it stick that little bit more. Just as we were learning about certificates and the revision of the Construction Act in my Contract Administration module, I started having a larger involvement with subcontractor accounts and issuing payment certificates in the Birmingham Gateway Project I work on, which allowed me to apply the knowledge practically. The construction technology module has helped me throughout my working career in methodology and allowing me to advise difference methods of construction to clients.

What do you think the benefits of studying a part-time course are for you as an individual?
Studying a part-time course allows me to utilise the knowledge I gain from NTU in a professional environment which really helps the knowledge to sink in. Another great benefit is that I am earning whilst learning and NTU is a great place for networking with others in the industry.
