Helen Bainbridge
Placement: ISg Interior Exterior, Refurbishment Division, London
Placement position: Placement Trainee, Construction Manager

"The most enjoyable sections of the course are those that are practically based, such as the second year field trip to North Yorkshire. It really gives you more understanding of the processes. The trip also brought the group closer. It was a great time.

"My placement at Aybrook Street has been interesting, as this particular site is not only a new build, but also a fit-out and refurbishment. The planning permission was only granted for the new build on the condition that one of the facades was kept in place and refurbished to its original glory. I have been shadowing the senior Construction Managers and have been put in charge of particular contractors. This has involved ensuring that the contractors are working suitably, in the right areas and to the right time-scales.

"My placement has been a really great experience, I have learnt so much. The leap from theory into practise is massive, but I think my placement has put me in an even better position for reaching my full potential in my final year’s study.

"The highlights of this year have been watching the construction process as a whole and being able to put all my theoretical knowledge into practice. I have also enjoyed being an active member of the site team. Achievements have included putting together the site show-flat, overseeing numerous packages and having a say in the roles and responsibilities onsite. My biggest achievement personally though was to become more assertive, and learning to be a stronger manager.

"I have to admit since working at Aybrook street for a year I am tempted to look into TSM (Technical Services Manager), or perhaps being a Design Manager, but who knows what the future holds."
