The civil engineering staff team, and the School as a whole, are closely engaged with the civil engineering professions.

Accreditation

Both of our BSc and BEng Civil Engineering courses are accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) which includes the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). This accreditation guarantees the essential foundation of knowledge, skills and competencies which will enable successful students to develop careers in civil engineering.

BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering
With further learning, leads to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status – "an innovator who can lead teams of engineers and technicians developing solutions to civil engineering problems." Institution of Civil Engineers

BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering
With further learning leads to Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status – "a professional engineer who promotes today's technology and applies and manages its use within the broad field of civil engineering." Institution of Civil Engineers

Through the civil engineering staff, students at all levels work closely with designers and engineers within the construction industry. This occurs through work placement, guest speakers and tutors, industrial liaison groups, live projects, research and consultancy activities.

Prominent industry figures contribute regularly to our lecture programme. We have recently appointed new visiting professors to the subject area, bringing new and rich seams of knowledge:

Professor John Pike (OBE)
Professor Pike has combined wide professional experience with a long academic career – he has been involved in a wide range of projects from the design of sustainable foundations for new housing to the facades of the new Arsenal Football Stadium.

We will continue to appoint visiting professors and welcome guest lecturers creating a dynamic and impressive extended faculty.
