What attracted you to Building Surveying at NTU?
I initially decided to study Building Surveying at NTU because I have always been attracted to the construction industry. There are many roles that contribute to the trade, but I believe as a surveyor you have the opportunity to specialise in every aspect, whether it be pre, during or post construction. The course at NTU offered the best balance of these aspects and also had work placement and has an impressive reputation. A definite strength of the course at NTU is its relevance; I believe that the course helps to prepare an individual for whatever specialism they may choose upon graduating.
Which projects have you been involved in on placement?
My placement with Great Ormond Street Hospital has been excellent, I have been involved in the whole spectrum of Estates Management. My senior colleagues are committed to helping me through the year towards my APC and have programmed the experience that they want me to achieve. The role that I am in allows me to interact with every specialist concerned with the running of the Trust, which has proven to be a catalyst to my development. I have been involved in a lot of project management which has been enjoyable as I have been able to apply the theoretical knowledge gained at NTU.
What has been a highlight of the placement?
A highlight from the placement would be the completion of the first project that I handled from the outline proposal to the handover; this was very rewarding as the client was very happy with the finished refurbishment. Due to the nature of my position at Great Ormond Street I have gained a much better understanding of the work disciplines available for a Surveyor.
