Adam BarkerCost reduction of an engine damper guard through design and manufacture
Continuing a project started on placement at Cummins in Daventry, I was able to develop a guard that targeted and exceeded a 15% cost reduction on the KV damper range for High Horsepower Engines.
The guard body is manufactured from one piece of 1.2mm sheet steel and has been FEA and shaker rig tested to guarantee safety.
The project gave me the opportunity to utilise Six Sigma tools, meet Cummins ISO, ASME and BS Standards, hold design review meetings, use tools such as ProEngineer and Ansys software, develop further FEA knowledge and Understand the importance of cost reduction is a large multinational company

Glyn CoulterH2 flow - An investigation into the application of hydropower in the urban environment
The H2 flow is a domestic turbine designed to sustainably generate electricity from grey water in a high-rise building. Featuring a ‘twin turbine design’ the H2 flow is exceptionally efficient in both converting mechanical energy and generating electricity.
Developed from green-minded materials and processed the H2 flows to provide adequate power and to light communal areas in congested residential living spaces. -

Harry SawyerThe collapsible bicycle helmet
The product provides cyclists with a collapsible method of head protection, allowing for trouble-fee transport and storage.During his third year Harry completed a semester exchange at Copenhagen University College of Engineering. He also spent eight months working with The Hive at NTU on developing his own product, the Boophis Headboard which he first designed in his first year.

Peter SouthallReducing the stress of waking up
Waking up suddenly can result in ‘sleep inertia’ known as grogginess. This is reduced when woken at certain periods during a person’s sleep.
This innovative design features an accelerometer that measures movement during sleep. The product then wakes the user up at the least stressful time according to their unique sleeping pattern. Electrolycra fabric on the strap gradually heats up and the watch vibrates waking the user up steadily without a stressful shock. -

Robert YorkeFallAid
Mechanical fall device for fire evacuation
The mechanical fall device incorporate planter gearing and a centrifugal brake. By uniting these two major components, a method of controlled descent is achieved allowing for users to elude dangerous situations. The user attached to the rope via a simple sling. This rope wraps around a pulley converting the linear motion of the fall into rotation. Using the planetary cell as a speed increaser the centrifugal brake can engage. The flyweights centrifuge outwards, as they come into contact with the housing, friction is caused, slowing the user’s rate of fall.

Sean O'HaraFreezer defrost alarm
If the contents of a freezer defrost and then refreeze with the owner’s knowledge, the owner risks consuming contaminated food.
The freezer defrost alarm can alert the user of the health hazard. If the temperature of the freezer rises to 4°C, a bimetal disc triggers the release of a sliding cover revealing the large X shape. After 12 hours, this X will illuminate and flash, advising the user to dispose of the freezer contents whether they are frozen or not. -
