A new consultancy unit, Nottingham Economics, is to be launched at Nottingham Trent University on 27 November, with a guest lecture by Confederation of British Industry (CBI) chief economic adviser, Ian McCafferty.

Professor McCafferty is responsible for all economic analysis at the CBI, including forecasting and policy work, and its well known surveys of economic trends in the UK. At the consultancy launch he will talk about the impact of the current recession on the UK and the East Midlands region, particularly on private sector organisations in Nottingham and the East Midlands. He will also be talking about the longer term legacies of the economic turmoil of the past two years, and how this will change business behaviour in the coming years.

Nottingham Economics has been created within the University's Nottingham Business School. It will offer consultancy expertise across a wide variety of issues, including statistical surveys of economic trends, evaluations of policy change and the analysis of local and regional labour markets, housing markets and business investment opportunities. It will also offer bespoke short-courses focusing on most aspects of economic analysis and evaluation at local, regional or national levels.

Members of Nottingham Economics have previously undertaken consultancy work for organisations such as the Office of Government Commerce, East Midlands Development Agency (emda) and the East Midlands Regional Assembly, as well as several private sector clients.

Dr Andy Cooke, economics lecturer at Nottingham Business School, heads the new centre and will also speak at the launch. He said: "We're pleased to be welcoming Mr McCafferty to help us launch this unit as he is a key figure in UK economics. We'll be drawing on all the expertise we have within the School to help organisations assess the local and wider economic impact of their plans, such as moving their operations to a new location or opening a new branch."

The launch is part of Nottingham Business School's 30th anniversary celebrations and will further extend the School's links with the wider economic community.
