Student volunteers set to make a difference
Student volunteers will take part in 27 community projects
Board-games and bingo with the elderly, painting a playground and a football fundraiser are just some of the projects organised by students at Nottingham Trent University as part of this year's national Student Volunteering Week. A total of 27 separate events have been arranged by the University's student volunteer scheme 'Initi8', between 22 and 28 February 2010.
Under the theme of 'inspiring futures and connecting communities' the University's growing team of student volunteers have put together a wide range of one day projects and events to benefit the local community, demonstrating the invaluable contribution that their efforts make every year.
Each of the projects and events have been organised by students for other students to get involved in. Emma Kehoe, a 19 year old maths student at the University has organised two of the week's events. She'll be taking a team of 10 volunteers to Radford Care Home on 24 February for an afternoon of board-games and bingo, and two days later – 26 February – will take another team to Stirling Grove Park in Clifton to re-paint a playground.
Emma said: "I'm really proud to be taking part in these projects. I'd never volunteered before I came to university, but I can see now just how important and valuable the work of student volunteers is to our local community. We're all really looking forward to the projects that we're involved in."
David Cameron Walker, President of Nottingham Trent Students' Union, said: "Over the course of National Student Volunteering Week, Nottingham Trent University students will be committing hundreds of hours of their time to helping their local community. I'm really pleased that so many of our students are taking part."
