Research, scholarly and professional interests

Guillermo's research interests include:

  • the theory and philosophy of technology in architecture
  • phenomenology of the body and its role in experiencing space
  • the dualism of body and mind within the technological context of architecture
  • the notion of identity and sense of belonging
  • the links between place and identity; and the relationship between contemporary art and architecture.

He is particularly interested in the areas of phenomenology and cyberspace architecture. Previous work has investigated the influence of Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of the body in virtual reality scenarios and its connections with identity. His projects are rooted in the rise of digital architecture in the last twenty years and the role that cyberspace architecture is playing in today's architecture evolution.

Recently Guillermo started his PhD at NTU in which he investigates architecture's ability to develop and embody a sense of identity and belonging. This work has been based on the architecture of Mexico City and the different identities it represents towards the end of the 20th century and at the beginnings of the 21st century.
