Research, scholarly and professional interests

Emily Andersen is an internationally recognized photographer. Her black and white and colour photographs are included in major public and private collections. Through broad ranging projects Andersen's practice explores themes of portraiture, of the body, and of architecture using both still and moving image.  Her research is informed by techniques and materials employed in making photographs, as well as the historical and current philosophical debates around photographic representation.

Emily Andersen's photography has been published and exhibited internationally.  She has exhibited at The Royal Academy, The Institute of Contemporary Art, and The Photographer's Gallery in London. The Institute Francais d'Ecosse in Edinburgh, the Impressions Gallery York, the Ikon in Birmingham The Maison de Photo in Montreal, and The Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa Canada. She has won the John Kobal prize for innovative portraiture, and her portraits are in the permanent collection of The National Portrait Gallery in London. Mumford Fine Art in London represents Emily.

Current projects

Emily's book Paradise Lost and Found was published in September 2009 by HotShoe Books with funding by the National Lottery Fund through the Arts Council of England.

2011 / 12 Her touring exhibition Paradise Lost and Found has exhibited in Berlin, Munich and Timmendorferstrand and continues to tour in Germany.

Emily is making new portraits and working on her portrait archive to compile a series for publication in 2012. Andersen is inspired by making photographs on the road and is planning her next trip for 2011 / 12.

External academic and professional activity

  • Emily was a trustee for the Organisation of Visual Arts (OVA) from 1998 to 2008.The organisation curates exhibitions and publishes artist's catalogues internationally. Since 2009 OVA is based at INIVA (Institute of International Visual Arts) OVA holds the Tessa Boffin archive
