Machi's past supervision includes:
- Domestic Violence and Social Disorganisation
- Victim, Offender and Situational characteristics in Modelling Victimisation Incidents
- Crime counts modelling
- Crime perceptions and Cross-national criminal justice expenditure
Apart from single – dependent variable (preferably hierarchical) modelling of counts or risks, Machi's current interests include cross-national comparisons; multivariate hierarchical modelling of associated outcomes, such as violence and property crimes; and Poisson mixtures for counts, such as victimisation and/or offending events. These methodologies are most relevant for studying the ecology of crime as well as other socio-economic issues such as mental health, education and social services etc.
Prospective research students who are interested in studying these and related issues should aim to apply state of art methodology, which will in turn strengthen the validity of their empirical results for informing social policy and jump-starting their own research career.
