Job responsibilities
Dr Nicholas Midgley is the Programme Leader for the BSc Geography (Physical). He is also Module Leader for Earth Surface Processes and Landforms; Geographical Fieldwork (UK and Overseas); Introduction to Geology; Glaciology and Glacial Geomorphology; and Environmental Change.
Research, scholarly and professional interests
Areas of research include issues of ice-marginal processes, moraine sedimentology, geomorphology and structural characteristics at the following sites:
- Midre Lovénbreen and austre Lovénbreen in Svalbard (2009 and 1999);
- Svínafellsjökull in Iceland (2010, 2007 and 2005);
- Hagafellsjökull-Eystri in Iceland (2003 and 2002);
- Various sites in Switzerland (2004);
- Glaciology training courses undertaken on Storglaciären in Sweden (2003 and 2001);
- Various sites in the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland (1997-1999);
- Cwm Idwal in North Wales (1997-1998).
Current projects
Research funding in the period since 2007 includes:
- Paraglacial modification of englacial thrust moraines in Svalbard: implications for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, D Graham and N Midgley, The Royal Society (2008 to 2009), £14,700.
- Glacier response to a changing climate in southern Iceland, D Graham, D Evans, R Hodgkins, N Midgley, D Swift, D Twigg, S Cook and P Powis, NERC ARSF (2007), Equipment bursary.
