Research, scholarly and professional interests

Areas of research include material properties of equine hoof horn, sports injury and equine rehabilitation, Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) and electron paramagnetic resonance.

  • Material properties of equine hoof horn: Comparison of tubule density of donkey hoof horn with that of horse and pony hoof horn; analyses of the moisture content of both full hoof wall depth and partial hoof wall depth; identification of the modulus of elasticity of donkey hoof horn at different levels of hydration.
  • Sports injury and equine rehabilitation: The physiological effects of massage and deep oscillation on the horse.
  • Evening Primrose Oil (EPO): The effect on the mechanical properties of equine hoof horn, together with the influence of oral EPO on the lipids within the hoof wall.
  • Electron paramagnetic resonance: Computer modelling of the hoof wall using finite element analysis.
