Job responsibilities

Andy’s main teaching interests are in developmental psychology, research methods and introductory psychology. He teaches final year options on educational needs and inclusion and masters level options on observational methods. His introductory teaching through ‘key studies’ methods is supported by the text that he co-authored with Phil Banyard ‘Introducing Psychological Research’ (published by Palgrave/Macmillan). He has also edited two other major developmental psychology teaching texts on cognitive and language development, and on development in infancy. His main role in academic management is as Examinations and Assessment Officer, which involves providing academic leadership to the Psychology team with regard to all matters to do with assessment. Andy is also co-director of the Communication for Inclusion Research Unit (CIRU).

  • 2006-2007 British Council, £2,100, for Europe-wide research work on Facilitated Communication.
  • 2002-2004 National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR), US$93k, for research project on movement consistency in Facilitated Communication using video analysis (with Professor David Marks, City University, UK).
  • 1998-2001 The Barrow Cadbury Trust, £24k research for project on Facilitated Communication using video analysis.

Andy is Referee for the British Journal of Developmental Psychology for Autism: The International Journal for Research and Practice, for The International Journal of Social Research Methodology, and for Computers and Education.
