Job responsibilities
Sarah is the Deputy Programme Leader for the Research Masters in Psychology and a member of the Ethical Review and Risk Assessment group in Psychology. Her teaching responsibilities include modules in: gender; social psychology; introduction to political psychology (with a focus on citizenship); and qualitative research methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Research, scholarly and professional interests
Sarah is a discursive psychologist whose main research interests are:
- Masculinity and health
- Non custodial fatherhood (especially groups like Fathers 4 Justice)
- Male sex offenders
Citizenship, public participation and deliberative democracy.

Sarah was the named researcher on a research project with Margaret Wetherell (at the Open University) evaluating the National Institute for Clinical Excellence’s (now known as the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) Citizens Council.
Sarah is a visiting member of the Discourse and Rhetoric Research Group (DARG) at Loughborough University.
Sarah is also part of a collaborative project with members of the psychology department and Her Majesty’s Prison Whatton (the Sexual Offences, Crime and Misconduct Research Unit, SOCAMRU).
Sarah is also a member of the Gender Studies Research Group.
Sarah is currently setting up a piece of collaborative research with Mary Horton-Salway (Open University), Jane Montague (University of Derby), and Sally Wiggins (University of Strathclyde) on a research project about student/tutor interaction in telephone conference workshops.
Current projects
Sarah was successful in a bid for internal research funding from the psychology department to undertake some research about non custodial fathers and Fathers 4 Justice.
External academic and professional activity
Sarah has acted as a reviewer for a number of peer reviewed research journals including:
- The Journal of Social and Personal Relationships
- Discourse and Society
- The Journal of Health Psychology.
Sarah has also acted as a reviewer for an ESRC grant application.

Sarah has supervised projects including topics on:
- Fatherhood
- Late onset puberty in males
- Women and the veil
- Plastic surgery
- Children’s eating practices
- Cage fighters
- Chronic illness
- Binge drinking
- Teaching autistic children.
She is keen to work with students who wish to use discursive psychology, narrative analysis or conversation analysis but would consider supervising projects using other qualitative methods.
