Research, scholarly and professional interests

David Kidner’s research and teaching interests are focused around the conflict between the natural order and industrialism, and include the shaping of selfhood in industrial societies, the effects of industrialisation on psychological well-being, and the relationship between culture and the natural world. He has secondary interests in critical psychology, psychotherapy, and environmental philosophy. As an ex-chemical engineer, he is also interested in the relation (or lack of relation) between the social and physical sciences.

Current projects

David is currently involved in completing a book entitled Culture of Delusion: How Industrial Society Lost Touch with Reality. He is also collaborating on a cross-cultural investigation of environmental attitudes and behaviour with colleagues in China.

External academic and professional activity

David is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and is on the editorial board of the journal Environmental Ethics. He has also spent three separate years teaching in the USA.

Information for prospective research students

David is interested in supervising students in the areas of environmental social science and critical psychology.
