Mentor of the Month: Jon Barber, Communications Manager at Ferrari World, is available to mentor you
Jon Barber has volunteered to mentor NTU students
You can now get personal, one-to-one, careers advice via email from successful professionals - who are also former students (alumni). These professionals have volunteered to mentor you!
There are a huge number of professionals available to help you, including:
Jon Barber
Subject of study when at NTU: BA Hons Broadcast Journalism, 2000
Employer: Ferrari World Abu Dhabi
Current position: Communications Manager
Why did you become a mentor?
I was provided with so much advice and assistance throughout my course and career (indeed I am still getting lots of advice from people who have been in the industry for years!) and I thought it would be a good way of helping current students getting into what is a very competitive job market. It also helps me stay in contact with NTU while I am so far away from home!
What does your current role involve?
I am responsible for all communication and messaging relating to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. As the world's largest indoor theme park it has garnered a lot of international commentary and I am responsible for ensuring a consistent flow of message and providing media with the information they need to report on the park. I also provide media training to senior executives, crisis communications counsel and I work closely with Ferrari in Italy, and other key stakeholders.
How has your career developed since leaving NTU?
- After graduating I joined the BBC.
- I was originally with BBC Radio Derby, before moving to BBC Radio Nottingham, and finally BBC Radio Leicester where I commentated on Leicester City and Leicestershire County Cricket Club as well as presenting Drivetime.
- In May 2008 I wanted a new challenge and I took a role as Account Director of a PR Agency in Dubai, UAE, looking after Panasonic, Dubai Sports City and Dubai World Trade Centre.
- I then took a short-term in-house position with Dubai World Trade Centre to set-up its PR department, before moving to Ferrari World Abu Dhabi in June 2010, six months before the park opened.
