Product Design student on scholarship in China
Emily Burroughs
BSc (Hons) Product Design student Emily Burroughs has spent the last six months studying on a scholarship in Harbin, China in lieu of a placement year.
“After discussing my options with my lecturers, they presented the opportunity to study in Harbin with the aid of a scholarship from Harbin Engineering University, NTU's partner university in China. Considering the industry in which I want to work and the influence of China in the world economy it would have been foolish not to see the potential in travelling, studying and living in China.” Emily said.
During the six months Emily has been living in China and studying alongside students of all nationalities, although not without its difficulties, as she explains: “Linguistically and culturally there are huge differences between the UK and China, however these have been interesting to learn and explore and have become valuable tools for me. Coming here alone was challenging, but it has taught be to be more confident and independent in my ventures.
“Living and studying at the university has allowed me to meet people from a variety of nationalities and cultures. The highlight has been sharing my experiences here with them and also sharing each other’s’ cultures.”
Coming to the end of the six months in China, Emily has decided to use the Erasmus scheme to continue her studies overseas. Her next destination is Copenhagen University College of Engineering for five months before returning to NTU to finish her degree.
