Success for Lucy Taylor in the Nottingham “Urban Sprint” Orienteering club challenge
Student orienteering their way through some open land
On 5 February, Lucy Taylor, NTU Orienteering club member, finished in first place at the Nottingham Orienteering Club Urban Sprint event, held at the Clifton campus. It took Lucy only twenty four minutes and twenty seconds to sprint around the entirety of the course. The ‘Short Technical course’ route, that Lucy took on, consisted of twenty eight controls (markers).
After the event Lucy said, ''Considering this was my first competitive run in ages I was quite pleased with the result.''
Lucy beat over sixty competitors, who all braved sub-zero temperatures of minus seven degrees, to run around the Clifton campus. With a mixture of twists, turns, open spaces and hedges, the Clifton campus provided a short but very intricate challenge that required fast legs and quick decision making, something Lucy demonstrated a clear talent for.
Mike Smith, NTU Sport and Lifestyle Development Officer for Outdoor Activities, also ran. Despite being on home ground, he slipped up at some of the dead ends. However, Mike still managed to stay hot on Lucy’s heels, finishing in second place in the class. Mike also came fifth overall, on the ‘Long Technical course’, with a time of twenty seven minutes and seven seconds.
Event organiser, Harry Nicholson, praised the site for its ease of access and small but complex layout, providing competitors like Lucy a fast and relentless challenge.
