Aspiring reporter named Guardian Broadcast Journalist of the Year
Aspiring reporter and Nottingham Trent University graduate, Stephanie Oliver, has been named Broadcast Journalist of the Year at the prestigious Guardian Student Media Awards.
Steph, who graduated from the University’s Broadcast Journalism course in July, submitted a piece of final year coursework as her entry - a radio documentary entitled 'Changing Violent Husbands'. The emotive piece explores male perpetrator programmes for men who abuse their wives and whether they have any effect.
The documentary has now earned Steph a six week placement at Sky News, a one week placement at The Guardian and £600 prize money. This year's judging panel included BBC Radio1 DJ, Colin Murray; Channel 4 News anchor Jon Snow; Today presenter Evan Davis; and Alan Rusbridger, editor-in-chief of Guardian News and Media.
Steph, who is currently travelling the world before starting her career in broadcasting, said: “I'm over the moon to have won such a prestigious award and to have had my work recognised by some of the top media players. It’s a fantastic end to a great three years at Nottingham Trent University!”
Carole Fleming, programme leader for broadcast journalism at the University’s Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism, said: “We’re all very proud of Steph and she thoroughly deserves her award. It’s a sign that she has a long and successful career in broadcast journalism ahead of her.”
This is the second year running that a Nottingham Trent University graduate has received the Broadcast Journalist of the Year award, with Danielle Couchman receiving the honour last year for her documentary examining the poor standards of academic achievement amongst children from travelling communities.
