About the course
This popular course takes as its central focus the modern business organisation and combines it with a developed understanding of the wider economic forces that business and management continually have to engage with.
The course equips students with a sound background in the appropriate aspects of economics, both theoretical and applied.
Delivered by well-qualified and experienced staff through a variety of teaching and learning activities, the course will allow students to develop a range of skills directly relevant to a career in business and finance. The relevance of the skills and knowledge acquired is clearly reflected in the excellent employment record of graduates.
Whilst the focus of the course is on business considerations, a number of options are available, allowing students to consolidate their studies in this area, or complement them with examination of other, related aspects of economics.

The course combines a practical focus on universal and particular business issues with the development of analytical skills stemming from study of the economic context and perspective.
Final year students are encouraged to act as mentors to incoming students, providing an important, additional source of assistance, advice and support, whilst also giving finalists valuable experience.

Assessment
We use a variety of methods to assess progress, tailored to the particular learning outcomes for each module. These include written coursework (essays, reports, briefings), participation in debates or presentations, and the dissertation, as well as examination. Regular feedback is provided on students' progress.
Exciting new opportunities
We have recently introduced a new level two framework which provides full time students (non placement) a different learning experience in the second half of year two. Students can choose one of the following options:
- study at an International Partner University
- undertake an internship
- work alongside NTU's purpose built enterprise development centre the HIVE on an enterprise project
- undertake a community project
- alternatively continue with the second year of study.

Your future career
95% of our graduates* with first degrees from full-time or sandwich study are employed or engaged in further study six months after leaving (*of those available for work, HESA survey 2008/09).
Our Economics graduates have an excellent employment record across a range of occupations and settings. They have been particularly successful in obtaining careers in accounting, finance, management, IT and teaching; all areas that use the analytical, numerical and communication skills gained during study. Work placement
Students on the course have an opportunity to complete a three-month paid internship in a relevant finance setting. Students apply for available internship positions with extensive support from the School’s Placement Office. The internship offers students the chance to apply their knowledge and skills in an appropriate employment setting and signal the experience gained to future employers.

What are the benefits of a work placement?
Practical work experience has many benefits for you. It can help you in your day-to-day studies and is often paid. It can enhance your commercial awareness and your ability to link theory and practice which will be an invaluable skill in your future career. Although a work placement is highly recommended, obtaining one is based on an individual’s efforts and is not guaranteed.
