The national reputation for the quality of Design and Technology teachers that Nottingham Trent University provides ensures an on-going demand for our Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs). Many of our graduates move into leadership and management positions in schools within a few years after graduation. Many graduates work in our local partnership schools in the East Midlands as well as further afield to teach in secondary schools both in the UK and overseas.
Graduates from the programme are equipped to teach Design and Technology at Key Stages Three in all four material areas associated with Design and Technology Education:
- Resistant Materials
- Textiles Technology
- Food Technology
- Systems and Control
Graduates are able to teach at least one of these material areas at General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) level and at Advanced level.
The transferable skills developed during the programme in such areas as problem-solving, organisation, management, working with others and IT are much sought after in other career areas. Previous graduates who have decide not to pursue a career in teaching have found the degree is highly relevant in other areas, both within and outside of education.
We have a strong partnership with local secondary schools and colleges and all students will be involved in some school-based work in the first two years. During the third year of the course, there is a real focus on teaching practice and professional studies. All students undertake 24 weeks of teaching placements in at least two different local schools.
