About the course
The course equips students with a range of transferable skills through a strong and committed focus on managerial and professional practice, including:

• a capacity for independent and critical thought; numerical proficiency
• problem-solving and decision-making. 

The dynamic course curriculum, with an emphasis on risk-based strategic approaches, reflects developments in the subject area at national and international levels. Its content will challenge students' perceptions and interpretation of issues affecting a wide range of organisations. The course aims to produce multi-skilled, interdisciplinary health and safety professionals equipped for more senior management roles in a variety of employment sectors.

A graduate from the MSc Health and Safety Risk Management programme will be eligible for specialist membership of the Institute of Risk Management as they will be able to demonstrate specialist knowledge of an area of risk. Specialist membership will enable the use of the designation SIRM.

Course

Course content
The MSc comprises 180 credit points of study within the following modules:

• Governance And Risk Management
• Work, Health And Well-Being
• Psychology, Behaviour And Safety
• Crisis And Business Continuity Management
• Regulation And Compliance
• Research Methodology
• Dissertation.

The modules can be offered individually for the purpose of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Assessment
The assessment methods chosen for this course have been carefully considered as a result of module and course specific learning outcomes.The course will be assessed in the following way:

• Governance and Risk Management (100% formal report)
• Work, Health and Well-being (100% portfolio)
• Psychology, Behaviour and Safety (100% essay)
• Crisis and Business Continuity Management (80% formal report and 20% oral presentation)
• Regulation and Compliance (100% formal report)
• Research Methodology (100% formal report)
• Dissertation (25% formal report and 75% dissertation).

There are no formal examinations for this course.

Study routes
Teaching is scheduled on Monday for part-time study and Monday and Tuesday for full-time study over three 15-week periods centred on the traditional three-term structure. There are no programmed sessions during August. All modules, with the exception of the dissertation, are taught and are delivered through a combination of formal lectures, student-led seminars/workshops and site visits, where applicable.

This MSc course builds on the success of the previous MSc Occupational Health and Safety Management with a widening of the curriculum and movement away from a more UK-based syllabus. The course encompasses a wider, comparative international perspective, in which, students will be encouraged to engage with key policy initiatives thereby enabling them to operate effectively and reflectively at a strategic level.

Our staff and teaching facilities are located on the University's City site in the heart of Nottingham, ensuring they are readily accessible to all. Students are supported by a full range of learning resources, from a £13 million library and education resource centre - where 24-hour IT access is available - to our comprehensive Student Support Services and International Development Office.

Opportunities exist for suitable candidates to pursue a research degree (MPhil/ PhD). Graduates will also be equipped with the skills necessary to pursue senior management or strategic positions within a variety of employment sectors.

Accreditation
The MSc Health and Safety Risk Management is accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health for graduate membership (Grad IOSH) purposes. The course is also endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health who deemed it to be of benefit to Environmental Health Practitioners. At a previous accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, it was noted that "it is a well run course with a long-established track record, delivered in an inspiring and confident manner. The course is flexible … and there are good support and pastoral care arrangements."

How to apply

Entry requirements

You will need one of the following:

• an undergraduate honours degree in a related subject (such as Environmental Health, Occupational Health and Safety etc.)
• Professional Diploma in Safety, Health and Environmental Management
• NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Level Four in Occupational Health and Safety.

You will also need broad knowledge and/or experience of health and safety that can be demonstrated. No references are required when applying for this course.

English language requirements - IELTS 6.5 (min writing score 6.0)/TOEFL 560 (min writing score 5)/TOEFL iBT 83 (min writing score 24)
