About the Professional Diploma in Safety, Health and Environmental Management

As the business world continues to realise the full potential and cost-effectiveness of health and safety management, the demand for qualified practitioners rises. This undergraduate-level course incorporates Masters-level learning and provides a nationally recognised qualification in the dynamic subject area of Safety, Health and Environmental Management.
The aims of the course are:
- to provide an academic and practical course of study to meet the needs of existing and aspiring safety practitioners who already possess the Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health or other suitable qualification and require a higher qualification to Diploma level
- to enable students to follow a course of study for a qualification which meets the academic requirement needed to gain Graduate Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health
- to provide an integrated programme of study gaining professional recognition for environmental studies.

Course content
The course consists of six modules:
- Risk Assessment and Management
- Law for Health and Safety Practitioners
- Occupational Health and Hygiene
- Safety Technology
- Environmental Management
- Professional Study Skills.
Assessment
These are modular in design via a combination of coursework and/or open book assessments.
Resources and facilities
In addition to having well-equipped facilities for lectures and seminar classes, the department has computers with specialist software, which are linked to the University network.
Special benefits
The curriculum design and educational basis of delivery provides students with the opportunity to continue their studies further. The environmental management module is studied and assessed at masters level.
Careers in Safety, Health and Environmental Management
This course is fully accredited by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), allowing successful students to apply for Graduate membership.
Furthermore, completion of the environmental management module allows students to apply for associate membership of IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment).
This course does not currently offer placements.
