The MEC is a 28-week course designed for graduates with a degree in a subject other than Mathematics who wish to train as secondary Mathematics teachers.
The course is intended to support graduates as they develop their breadth and depth of mathematical knowledge before they begin an initial teacher training course (ITT) which would lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It is designed to support the development of the subject knowledge required for teaching Mathematics in secondary schools and develop communication skills and the awareness of the nature of teaching and learning of secondary Mathematics.

This course is designed for graduates with a degree in a subject other than Mathematics who wish to train as secondary Mathematics teachers. Trainees that continue and successfully complete either a PGCE or GTP course which leads to a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) are ideally placed to pursue a career as a teacher in a secondary school or college.
This course does not offer placements.
Applications should be made directly to the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR). As soon as the completed forms are sent to us from the GTTR, we invite selected candidates to attend for interview.

Provider referral
If a provider thinks an applicant would be suitable for secondary Mathematics teaching, but needs to improve their mathematics knowledge, they can offer a place on their PGCE or GTP programmes for the following year. However, this offer is on condition that the applicant successfully completes the MEC. GTTR will accept deferred applications for PGCE placements. There are then two possibilities:
- an ITT provider contacts the MEC directly and, provided there are vacancies, refers an applicant to the MEC
- an applicant, having been offered a conditional place on either a PGCE or a GTP course, makes an application to the MEC. In this case the MEC will confirm with the provider that an ITT place has been offered.
If it is necessary to place the applicant on a waiting list, the MEC will inform both the ITT provider and the applicant.
