Childcare Practice
This course gives social workers and other childcare professionals the opportunity to gain a specialist qualification, validated by the General Social Care Council. This is both an academic and a professional course. Students are expected to undertake assessed practice, which usually takes place in their own workplace.
Modules are also available to be taken as part of continuing professional development.

Nottingham Trent University is offering a consolidation module for qualified child care social workers not directly employed by a local authority, for example social workers in the voluntary and independent sector and agency workers. The course will be taught in Nottingham city centre on the following dates in 2012: 19 - 20 April and 14 – 15 May. The closing date for applications is 9 March 2012.

The module follows on from the Newly Qualified Social Worker programme, but is also suitable if you qualified before the NQSW was introduced. You can then go on to complete the rest of the award. Successful completion of these modules will lead to the award of BA (Hons) Childcare Practice or the Postgraduate Diploma Childcare Practice, depending on the entry level.
Modules are also available to be taken as part of continuing professional development.
Assessment
Assessment of the Consolidation module is by a written assignment and observation of practice and a portfolio. Assessment of the remaining five modules is carried out via:
- written assignments
- presentations
- case analysis
- demonstration of competency in practice and an exam.
How do you study?
The course is part-time, one day a week over a calendar year. Applicants can apply for either the BA (Hons) or Postgraduate Diploma in Childcare Practice depending on their previous level of qualification.
Resources and facilities
- Module One will be taught jointly by Nottingham Trent University and agency staff in the candidate's own agency premises.
- Modules Two - Six are taught by staff from the social work division at Nottingham Trent University.
Students have access to the full range of University facilities such as the £13 million library, Fitness Suite and Student Support Centre.

The course has strong links with the statutory, voluntary and private sector. There is a strong emphasis on the integration of practice into the curriculum. All students will have a practice mentor assessor from their agency.
This is both an academic and professional course, which gives you the skills needed to practice with children and families at an advance level. Previous graduates have gone on to management careers within the social work profession.
On successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to apply to the MA Professional Practice in Childcare.
This employment focused course has strong links with the statutory, voluntary and private sectors and has been designed with the help of managers, practitioners and service users. There is a strong emphasis on the integration of practice into the curriculum and all students undertake work-based learning.
Entry requirements for the BA (Hons) / Postgraduate Diploma in Childcare Practice
- You will need a qualification in Social Work or an equivalent professional qualification in a related field.
- Applicants usually apply through their employing agency.
- For direct admission to the BA (Hons) / Postgraduate Diploma Childcare Practice (modules two to six), applicants must have completed the Consolidation Module or its predecessor PQ1 .
- You must be in employment in a social work capacity and working with children.
- You must also be able to evidence your ability to study at A-level, level three, or above.
- All applicants will require a Letter of Recognition from the General Social Care Council or Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work.
- Two references are required: one academic and one vocational.
- All applicants will be required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau disclosure prior to admission.
For entry to the Consolidation Module, applicants need to have a professional qualification in social work or an allied profession.
