About the course
The routes of study are linked and share six of the eight modules. Two modules will specifically relate to your choice of route. Further details of the modules can be found under the course tab. We recommend that you consider all of the modules before applying for one of the routes. You can choose to study one of three routes.
1. MSc Marketing
This is aimed at students who are interested in a general career in marketing, for example as a marketing manager or who may not wish to specialise. You will consider aspects of marketing management and how marketing operates in a variety of different contexts.
2. MSc Marketing (Advertising and Communications)
This route is aimed at students with a particular interest in marketing communications and who are aiming for a career in advertising or brand management.
3. MSc Marketing (Retail)
This route is aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in retail marketing or buying where marketing will be considered specifically from a retail perspective, including managing the supply chain.
No matter which option you select, you will study a specialist marketing programme that has been designed to provide the skills, knowledge, understanding, practical abilities and confidence required by high-achieving marketing professionals in the global economy. Consultation with the marketing industry ensures that what you study is contemporary and that the course as a whole delivers what employers want from graduates, whilst maintaining the academic content required for study at this level.

Please note the following information for applicants
Course content
The programme is founded on a dynamic relationship between marketing theory and the practice of marketing. Central to this is the view that marketing should be conceptualised as more than a function or a series of isolated tasks - it is also an organisational strategy and way of thinking that can be shared across the whole organisation. Your modules therefore follow a structured thematic approach that explores core marketing tasks but in a way that emphasises the complexity of these and the need to use judgement and creativity. Consequently it is our intention that you will not leave NBS thinking you know and hence can 'do' marketing through blindly following a textbook approach. Instead you will be sensitive to complex internal and external environments, and seek to practice marketing in an integrative manner.
During the year you will study eight modules; three in term one, three in term two and two in term three (there are only two in term three as the Applied / Consultancy Project is worth double the amount of credits). Teaching typically takes place between 10am and 4pm on three or four days of the week.
Detailed Module Information is included in the following document

In addition, a Masters degree is an ideal foundation for further research at DBA, PhD or MPhil level.
Although this course does not currently offer a placement, the applied consultancy project provides the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge gained from the previous modules within a real life UK business setting. The Consultancy Project enables you to undertake an assignment to develop your consultancy skills and gain a detailed understanding of the management and operation of a modern business.
The consultancy project
Designed to integrate and operationalise theory, the consultancy project provides groups of programme members with the opportunity to put theory into practice in a real life UK business setting. The module aims to develop the capacity to work as part of a management team through active participation in a live consultancy project, and to enhance the ability to communicate clearly; argue rationally; and apply strategic concepts to produce real business solutions - given time constraints and conditions of uncertainty.
Real-world experience
All of our courses are vocationally-oriented, providing the skills and experience that are relevant to and valued by employers. The applied consultancy project, carried out in collaboration with local organisations, continues to be a key factor in the success of our courses and one on which we are keen to build.
