About the course
This course is designed to provide a broad and solid introduction to modern system-orientated ICT applications, such as those employed in the expanding field of mobile communications, mobile computing, wireless networking and rich media technologies. New personal communication devices and smart networks will change the way we live, work and interact. By studying this course you have the chance to become a leading expert within this field.
What do you study?
This degree focuses on modern system-orientated computing applications, such as those employed in the exploding field of mobile communications, wireless networking, multimedia and rich media. This course teaches you the fundamentals of communication and networks, system development and audio-visual science to provide an understanding and appreciation of the ICT market. This is developed further in your second year, partly through a series of lectures by industrialists, aimed at providing you with insight into the latest market designs and trends. Specialist subjects like mobile and wireless communications and pervasive computing are studied in the final year, alongside your final-year project on a topic of your choice.

Assessment
You will be assessed through a mixture of coursework, assignments and examinations. The coursework will mostly be individual with some group work, and will include presentations, demonstrations and laboratory exercises.

Placements on this course
After the second year, you will have the opportunity to undertake a placement in industry, including overseas options. If taken, this will give you the chance to gain vital experience and put your knowledge into practice. Recent placement salaries have ranged from £12,000 to £35,000. Many students impress their employers on placement and are offered jobs at the end of their course. The School has an excellent record of placing students and has good contacts with both local and national industry. A number of placements are available in Europe and worldwide. On completion of a successful placement, you will be eligible for a Placement Diploma in Industrial Studies.
