Legal placement
You will undertake a paid placement throughout the third year to gain experience of a legal work environment. Law firms, ranging from major national and international businesses to small rural practices, as well as company, government and local authority legal departments, have enthusiastically endorsed this degree course and offer our students the chance to put theory into practice.
The placement lasts for a period of at least 36 weeks (Year Three). Students return to University at the start of the next academic year in September/October and continue their final year of studies (Year Four) for the LLB (Hons) Sandwich degree.
We have well-established links with law firms who provide placements for our students from year to year and who are selected because they provide a work-based learning opportunity of real value. We are proud of our close ties with the legal profession and the large number of leading law firms that we count as core clients.
The practical experience acquired on placement complements the theoretical grounding and skills training received at Nottingham Law School, giving you a head start after graduation. Many placement students have gone on to undertake their training contracts and subsequently to qualify as solicitors in their former placement firms.
Gaining a placement is a competive process and you will be required to apply to a firm and complete its selection procedures. While obtaining a placement cannot be guaranteed, Nottingham Law School has a long and successful record of helping students find a placement. Successful completion of a placement has significant benefits; it increases your chances of obtaining a training contract and opens up the possibility of a reduction in your training contract by up to six months. If you do not obtain a placement you will be transferred onto the three year LLB (Hons) full-time course.

You will be awarded the Diploma in Professional Practice upon successful completion of your placement. This additional qualification, awarded by the University, provides a framework to enable you to acquire enhanced understanding of the culture, structure and organisation of a legal workplace and recognises your work-based skills.
Giving you competitive advantage
A work placement is a valuable addition to your education. You'll gain vital real-life work experience that will make you stand out from the crowd and enhance your employability in your chosen field of work.
Work placements and internships
Many students enjoy the challenge of arranging their own work placement or a practical internship which forms part of many of our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It can give you invaluable insight into applying for a job, undertaking practical and theoretical application tests and experiencing what a real job interview is like.
