Designed in collaboration with industry professionals this course features established models and techniques of financial analysis used by economists. They will be applied to various financial issues, financial products and international financial markets. Its focus is on the models and techniques of financial analysis.
The emphasis is on applying knowledge, skills and techniques to analyse the instruments, participants and markets in international finance. During the programme you will be able to study specialist modules in the field of international finance and economics. All students on this programme undertake and present an in-company group consultancy project of real value to the commissioning organisation.
We have recently introduced a new framework for our full-time Masters programme, covering some significant and exciting developments that have come about through consultation with our students, staff and alumni. The new framework will facilitate greater engagement with external businesses and organisations, leading to an enhanced student learning experience.

Course content
This course, like others within the postgraduate platform suite of MSc programmes at Nottingham Business School (NBS), begins with a set of activities which equips all students with various ways to take advantage of what is distinctive about studying their chosen subject at Masters level at NBS.
Core modules in applying methods of economics, quantitative and other research techniques to finance in various ways at Masters level equip students to undertake more specialist studies. The largest module involves all students as a valuable consultant to a business organisation and also the choice of one module from a range of options.

Study and support
The nine modules are taught in four phases, over 12 months. Beyond the two-week MSc Foundation Studies module, independent study weeks for preparation and submission of final module assessments follow the weeks of class contact.
A range of teaching and learning methods are used in the intensive block teaching period depending on the module being studied. These methods include large group teaching, small group tutorials, research supervision, interactive teaching, industry-specific workshops (involving guest speakers, project work, etc), eSupported learning, guided and directed individual and group study and a variety of multimedia approaches.
Assessment
A variety of assessment methods are used including: extensive written reports, essays, individual and group projects and presentations.

Opportunities for progression
Graduates from this course can work in the finance and economics sectors in careers relating to banking and financial markets including central banking, investment banking, pensions analysis, unit and investment trust management, corporate finance and international finance. Graduates can also pursue academic research in the UK or further afield.
Career development
Employment skills are crucial for any graduate. As part of the course, careers advisers will run a series of workshops, where students can identify methods and strategies to enable them to effectively pursue their career goals. The focus will be on developing your skills and occupational awareness, and workshops will focus on both home and international students.
Instead of a placement of the traditional type, this course features a final module which enables you to work in a small group as a professional consultant for a period on site in an organisation that has been selected by NBS. Selection is based upon the organisation's appreciation of the knowledge, skills and other qualities that students develop throughout their programme. Each group will complete and deliver a project of real value to the organisation.
Entry requirements
- You will need an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK undergraduate honours degree (2.2 or above) which includes equally successful study of a substantial amount of quantitative analysis including statistical theory; and at least intermediate-level study (e.g. Higher Education Level Two) of Economics or Finance, or a recognised equivalent qualification.
- Alternatively, applicants with experience of working in a relevant economics or finance occupation that demonstrates the equivalent knowledge and skills through employment and training will be considered but will be required to demonstrate their motivation and ability to study at the required academic level in their Personal Statement.
