This distinguished postgraduate degree programme, delivered in collaboration with the University of Valencia, Spain and the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany, provides a unique opportunity for you to truly experience a degree that will give you the knowledge, skills and attributes to gain employment in the international job market that is performance analysis.
This degree programme is delivered over two years and is structured in such a way as to ensure that you receive a blend of theoretical underpinning, supported by applied and practical experiences which are reinforced through engagement with work placement opportunities and in-depth research. In the first year you will undertake 3 x 12 week teaching blocks at each university in your first year and then return to your home university for the second year to undertake the work placement and research project.

Performance analysis involves the observation, analysis and evaluation of human movement through match (game statistics) and motion (movement patterns) analysis, biomechanics and technique analysis, skill acquisition and motor control; alongside practice rehearsal and coaching principles. Each module will require a total of 280 hours of student learning and study which includes lecturer-led taught sessions (such as lead-lectures, seminars, tutorial, workshops, and practical classes), virtual-contact with the module through on-line resource centres, as well as student-led independent study.
The degree programme operates under a transferable system of academic credits (ECTS – European Credit Transfer Scheme) that enables credits to be assimilated at the different Universities which contribute to your degree. You will undertake 120 credit points (equivalent to 60ECTS) in each year thereby achieving 240 credit points (120ECTS) qualifying you for the award of MSc International Performance Analysis of Sport.
Based on the recognition that the demand for scientifically qualified staff in performance analysis is increasing, this degree programme prepares you to undertake work in the following areas:
- quantitative and qualitative biomechanical analysis of technique
- match analysis in individual and team sports
- analysis of technical effectiveness
- analysis of patterns of play, tactics and strategy
- analysis of movement patterns, work-rates and physical demands of match play
- analysis of movement and injury risk
- analysis of umpire or referee decision making
- analysis of coach behaviour
- analysis of psychological aspects of performance such as aggression and attention focus.
The work placement takes place in the second year of study and should be a minimum of three months but NTU encourages students to extend this to a longer time e.g. July - May, which should coincide with a sporting season. We have an extensive network of links with professional football clubs as well as beginning to develop links with professional rugby clubs.
The benefits of a placement are to provide students with experience within a professional environment develop and refine vocationally relevant skills and develop a network of industry contacts. Work experience is essential for enhancing employability and employers are increasingly insistent on candidates with experience.
