About the course
The BA (Hons) Economics, Finance and Banking programme has a core of economics running throughout, which will introduce you to the important economic concepts and theories as well as issues relating to the economic and financial environment. The programme strongly emphasises the application of economic analysis using real-life issues and problems in the field of finance and banking. The programme is designed to help you develop important skills for employment in the finance sector, particularly quantitative and analytical skills. The programme also focuses other transferable skills such as presentation skills (writing and oral), team work and time management to prepare you for the world of work.

The programme is three years full-time (four-year for the placement option).
You will study core economics modules in Years One and Two which develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of economics, particularly those that are important for the analysis of finance and banking.
You will study a significant number of specialised modules of finance and banking throughout the programme, particularly at level three. These specialised modules develop the knowledge and understanding of important concepts and apply economic analysis to finance and banking. These specialised modules, and other modules in the programme, strongly emphasise the application of economic analysis in real-life examples. You, therefore, will be well prepared for the world of work with contemporary knowledge.
How do you study?
A wide range of teaching methods are employed: lectures, staff and student led seminars, IT workshops, case studies, role plays, group discussions, project work, group and individual presentations, and problem based learning.

Assessment
We use a variety of methods to assess progress, tailored to the particular learning outcomes for each module. These include written coursework (essays, reports, briefings), participation in debates or presentations, and the dissertation, as well as examination. Regular feedback is provided on students' progress.

Your future career
95% of our graduates* with first degrees from full-time or sandwich study are employed or engaged in further study six months after leaving (*of those available for work, HESA survey 2008/09).
There is strong evidence at national level that graduates with economics (including financial economics) degrees are sought after by employers. Nottingham Trent University’s economics graduates have excellent employment prospects with career opportunities in investment banking, insurance, accountancy, retail management and the Government Economic Service.

The BA (Hons) Economics, Finance and Banking programme will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in careers in primarily investment banking and financial analysis, but also wider employment areas. Graduates will also have an opportunity to use their degree as the basis for very successful postgraduate or professional study.
The programme provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate study and success in professional examinations.
Placement
Work placements, part of the four-year course, enable students to put theory into practice in a real commercial environment. This enhances both commercial awareness and the ability to link theory to practice in the final year of study.

Work placements and internships
Many students enjoy the challenge of arranging their own work placement or a practical internship which forms part of many of our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It can give you invaluable insight into applying for a job, undertaking practical and theoretical application tests and experiencing what a real job interview is like.
What are the benefits of a work placement?
Practical work experience has many benefits for you. It can help you in your day-to-day studies and is often paid. It can enhance your commercial awareness and your ability to link theory and practice which will be an invaluable skill in your future career. Although a work placement is highly recommended, obtaining one is based on an individual’s efforts and is not guaranteed.
English language requirements
All international students need to demonstrate that they have knowledge of written and spoken English that will enable them to cope with intensive academic study. We usually require students to have IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 560, or iBT TOEFL 83 or to obtain one of these qualifications on applying to Nottingham Trent University. When assessing your application we will take into account not only your academic ability but the information provided within your personal statement and reference, which should demonstrate your motivation to do the course and any other relevant information such as work or voluntary experience.
