All students will study three subject areas, one of which will be Professional Studies. It is this subject which gives the Joint Honours course its distinctive character.
You will undertake one core module in each year of your degree to develop your transferable and employability skills. In Year One you will be supported in your studies by an individual and group based learning module which develops, for example, research and writing skills. In Year Two students undertake a work based learning module including a 30-day placement in an organisation of your choice. Finally, in Year Three, a research based learning module enables you to pursue enquiry into an area of your choice.
Educational Development - Modules studied on this course consider all facets of how we learn and develop as well as looking in details at how the education systems are organised, particularly the English system.
Sport and Leisure is big business in the UK and overseas. This subject provides an in-depth look at the relevance of sport and leisure in societies across the globe, and the importance of sports in an educational environment.

Throughout the three years of the course you will study modules covering both your chosen subjects and also education. Teaching methods are varied; students will enjoy lectures, seminar discussion, practical work, project work, case studies and workshops in small groups which promote interaction and tutor contact.

Assessment is by coursework and timed tasks.
This course will provide a framework for a wide variety of possible careers. As well as careers based on the chosen subjects students may also consider teaching, training, human resource management, and many others.
The core Professional Studies modules have been developed to support your professional development, engage you in the wider context of learning and teaching and provide you with the tools to become successful learners in Higher Education. Furthermore, we anticipate that you will demonstrate and apply these skills during your professional placement and be able to offer them to future employers.
A six-week placement in the second year gives students an opportunity to put theory into practice and gain valuable work experience. Students enjoy a wide variety of settings: industrial, retail, commercial and public sector. These could include:
- rural, inner city and suburban schools
- hospitals and health authorities
- manufacturing companies
- major sports clubs and grounds in Nottingham
- social services
- prisons
- local authorities.
The programme will offer opportunities to become involved in a number of paid and voluntary schemes in the education, charity and voluntary sector, enhancing both professional and personal development.
