2011 Entry
We offer a broad, comprehensive course with a number of unique features which make this popular degree one of the most highly regarded in the country. It attracts a wide range of students wishing to take up a career working with children aged three to 11 years. The main aim of the course is to produce teachers who are confident, critical and creative professionals committed to the development of all through education. At the centre of our teaching is an understanding of young children, and how they learn and develop as individuals.
The course prepares for specialism at Foundation Stage (3-7 years) or Primary (5-11 years). Further subject specialisms in the National Curriculum Core and Foundation subjects, or Early Years, are available. Our close relationship with partnership schools means students can gain a wide experience of teaching in many different kinds of schools - large city schools, small rural schools, multi-ethnic schools and so on. The course is committed to supporting students in learning to teach inclusively - we believe students should be able to teach all children effectively.

Please note the following information for applicants
There is an equal weighting for core curriculum (Mathematics, English and Science), foundation curriculum (all other subjects) and general professional studies.
In the third year students continue with the spread of core curriculum areas but at this stage opt to specialise either in a foundation subject or continue in their studies for teaching the early years. This specialism continues into Year Four.
By the end of the course it is expected that students will have the ability to reflect on their own thinking processes in order to further develop their own subject knowledge in a range of curriculum areas, through extending and generalising ideas with a focus on applying them in classroom situations.

Assessment
A variety of methods are used throughout the course. Teaching and assessment includes lectures, workshops, seminars, presentations, group tasks and projects, as well as independent study and practical activities based within the University.
Students observe and discuss teaching approaches and resources in schools. Through a carefully planned progression, students take increasingly independent responsibility for planning and teaching groups and eventually whole classes of children.
Success in school experience is, of course, essential for obtaining Qualified Teacher Status.
Graduates of this course follow careers in primary teaching. Many will progress through the teaching structure to undertake management roles.
Students undertake school-based training and fieldwork which provides a unique opportunity to further knowledge of foundation subjects, ensuring deeper understanding of children's social and emotional needs.
You can apply for this course through the UCAS website.
