There is an equal weighting for core curriculum (Mathematics, English and Science), foundation curriculum (all other subjects) and general professional studies.

In the third year students continue with the spread of core curriculum areas but at this stage opt to specialise either in a foundation subject or continue in their studies for teaching the early years. This specialism continues into Year Four.

By the end of the course it is expected that students will have the ability to reflect on their own thinking processes in order to further develop their own subject knowledge in a range of curriculum areas, through extending and generalising ideas with a focus on applying them in classroom situations.

Assessment

A variety of methods are used throughout the course. Teaching and assessment includes lectures, workshops, seminars, presentations, group tasks and projects, as well as independent study and practical activities based within the University.

Students observe and discuss teaching approaches and resources in schools. Through a carefully planned progression, students take increasingly independent responsibility for planning and teaching groups and eventually whole classes of children.

Success in school experience is, of course, essential for obtaining Qualified Teacher Status.
