This innovative, multidisciplinary course enhances art with technology.
It is designed for artists wishing to further innovate and develop their practice through a greater understanding of the creative and cultural possibilities of new technology.
The course will enable you to:
- enhance, innovate and develop your artistic practice with technology
- study in a multidisciplinary design environment
- gain a broader education in technology-based disciplines
- develop concepts and ideas allied to the cohesion of science and art
- learn from visiting artists who will regularly contribute to the teaching.

About the course
The course places great emphasis on the development of a professional practice based on a platform of considered research, on critical understanding and reflection, and on an interdisciplinary approach to learning.
Some of the elements being sought by artists wishing to further innovate their practice and to create new works within the public domain may include:

External professional staff will contribute to the course content, the learning materials and lectures. This strengthens both cultural and industrial links as well as providing the opportunity to bring students into contact with specific high quality expertise and international artists and performers.

How do you study?
This course is modular and teaching is delivered through:
- lectures - to introduce concepts and knowledge
- seminars - to examine and develop an in-depth understanding through discussion
- workshops and laboratories - where staff can demonstrate the use of technology and materials and you can explore and receive formative feedback on practical work
- group and individual projects
- presentations and case studies.
Visiting artists
Visiting artists will regularly contribute to the teaching and you will be encouraged to attend the research seminars/conferences held in a range of disciplines to gain up-to-date knowledge in related subject areas and research methods.
Research Methods
In addition to the delivery of technical and materials knowledge, the course pays special attention to developing key skills in independent learning and research, which are supported by Research Methods. It will also be used to develop skills in both written and oral communication.
Major Study Project module
The major project module integrates the knowledge gained in each of the six taught modules. It enables you to develop as applicable highly specialised intellectual, technological, material and research skills, and to demonstrate a wide range of postgraduate qualities including critical awareness, critical evaluation, creativity, self-direction and originality.
Assessment
Assessments will require students to undertake practical work together with research and critical evaluation in order to demonstrate the link between theory and practice. A wide range of other assessment techniques incorporating technical reports, case studies and group projects are used where appropriate.

Course location
The course is based on the City site and benefits from the multidisciplinary features of the School - combining strengths in engineering, design, art, architecture and the built environment.
On successful completion of the course graduate destinations and employability may be related to:
- creative design in film and television
- arts management
- pursuing independent arts practice in UK, US, Korea, and Europe
- teaching (FE and special/specific groups)
- arts and technology advisor directing new research opportunities.
Work placements
Although this course does not offer a formal placement, all our courses are vocationally focused and benefit from strong links with industry. Work based placements maybe considered on an individual basis.
Regular visiting artists will provide in-depth insight into real practice.
Entry requirements
A good honours degree (minimum 2:2) in an art and design related discipline.
We welcome applications from mature applicants with non-standard qualifications who have relevant work experience. These applications will be considered on an individual basis.
English language entry requirements
English language entry requirements for courses in the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment and a full list of all English language qualifications accepted by the University are available on our website.
Pre-sessional English courses
We offer Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) courses from six to 30 weeks for students who need help achieving these requirements. Even if you have already met the minimum entry requirements you could still benefit, as many students do, from the study skills and orientation to the UK education system that is offered by a short PEAP course.

In-sessional English language support
In-sessional English language support classes are available to all international (non-EU) students studying on degree courses at NTU. There is no extra charge for these classes.
Application details
- All applicants will be required to attend an interview (for international students via telephone or Internet).
- All applicants will be required to provide a design portfolio or examples of project work, which can be from your previous studies or work in industry.
