The Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism at Nottingham Trent University has been training aspiring journalists for over 15 years. Our Journalism courses are among the most highly-regarded in the UK and our graduates have gone on to work with the BBC, ITN, Sky News, major newspapers and numerous BBC and commercial radio stations across the country.
This course has been developed in close association with major media organisations to offer innovative and relevant education and training for careers in newspaper and other print media. Students follow a well-balanced course that combines theoretical studies with practical training and professional work placements leading to a qualification recognised in the industry.
You will be given training in the use of audio recorders, video and still cameras, as well as television and radio presentation skills to reflect the growth of new media in the print industry. You will be taught by our experienced team of tutors and participate in 'news days' in which students produce a newspaper within one day with the appropriate mix of topical and ‘hard’ news stories.
You will be based in our state-of-the-art facilities which allow you to gain important hands on experience with all the latest equipment whilst studying in inspirational surroundings.

This vocational degree combines practical training in newspaper and other print media with a solid academic base. It will provide a specialist training which aims to turn students into outstanding journalists with a critical understanding of the processes of the industry. Featuring all the components that help our graduates obtain jobs in this very competitive field; law, politics, and journalism will all be studied, and shorthand, IT and research skills gained.
Modules in sport, magazine, online and celebrity journalism will be available to put graduates at the cutting edge of the media industry. The course includes a professional work placement which can take place anywhere in the country. Print Journalism is taught in a realistic working environment, in a multi-media newsroom at the Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism.

- Production Project: a combined module in which you will be required to produce a 3,000 word feature and a complementary dissertation of up to 10,000 words.
Assessment
Each module is assessed separately and may involve a combination of the following:
- essays
- projects
- competency portfolios
- placements
- class tests
- seminar presentations
- skills assessments
- formal examinations.
Over the three years students gradually increase their study skills and presentation techniques. The marks that count towards the degree also increased year-by-year, so that assessment is matched fairly with the expected rate of students' learning throughout the three year course.
Graduates from the BA (Hons) Print Journalism course have gone on to work as newspaper or magazine journalists, production journalists, news editors, sub-editors, and media related work in PR, marketing, promotions, and advertising.
Work placement
Students will be expected to undertake two three-week placements in newspaper and magazine newsrooms. Generally, these will be taken during vacation periods. The University can help to arrange these through its many contacts in the industry. Placements are also available through the Broadcasting and Journalism Industry Consortium, a network of regional and national media organisations that supports the programme of broadcasting and journalism courses at Nottingham Trent University.
