Course content
During your time at the Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism you will gain an understanding of the practices and processes of broadcast media. By the end of the three years, students will be able to produce news ‘packages’ enabling them to record and edit material for both radio and television. They will have received voice training to improve their news-reading abilities and will have broadened their knowledge through option modules in subjects such as:
- modern languages
- politics
- social theory.
In addition to the professional placements, all students are offered the opportunity to gain valuable experience of live, on-site broadcasting and producing online news output as well as writing for a student publication produced within the University.
The single honours degree in broadcast journalism is offered over three years of full-time study. Each successive year builds on and develops skills that have been introduced at an earlier stage. For this reason the course is not available for part-time study. Each academic year consists of two semesters, each offering a balance of practical and theoretical modules. Students also have the opportunity to develop special interests through option modules offered in the School. The learning culminates in an extended feature and dissertation during the final year.
Modules include:
Year One
- News Production and Studio Skills
- Covering the Courts
- Democracy in Action
- Media Matters
- Media, Power and Politics
Year Two
- News Production and Studio Skills
- Ethics and Regulation
- Keeping out of Court
- Sports Journalism
- Placement: Theory and Practice
Year Three
- Production Management
- The Limits of Liberty
- Celebrity Journalism
- Production Project: a combined module in which you will be required to produce original video or audio work and a complementary dissertation of up to 10,000 words.
Assessment
Each module is assessed separately and may involve a combination of the following:
- essays
- projects
- competency portfolios
- placements
- class tests
- seminar presentations
- skills assessments
- formal examinations.
Over the three years students gradually increase their study skills and presentation techniques. The marks that count towards the degree also increased year-by-year, so that assessment is matched fairly with the expected rate of students’ learning throughout the three year course.
