Professional accreditation
This degree is accredited as meeting the JBM requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired an Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng (Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate degree.
The JBM consists of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CHIT) and the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE).
The course is also accredited by the Engineering Council. This accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

How do you study?
- One year, full-time - taught average of two days a week
- Two years, part-time - taught average of one day a week
- Some modules are taught at weekends and some modules are taught during the week
The course is delivered through lectures, tutorials, workshops and case studies.
Teaching is supported by study guides. These form module handbooks explaining the structure of the module, its overall aims and specific objectives, learning outcomes and assessment criteria and methods.
Virtual Learning Environment
The University's virtual learning environment (NOW) is used to support the course. This web-based learning platform delivers learning materials, up-to-date module information, access to a news board and resources as well as the facility to upload coursework and communicate with tutors and other students.
Most staff teaching on the course are members of one or more relevant professional institutions and participate in industrial activities, consultancy, research and/or the activities of their professional institutions.
Many modules will also involve contributing external lecturers who will provide current industrial experience and viewpoints.
Assessment
Module assessment will include exams.
You will also undertake the following coursework:
- Preliminary questions - a set of short-answer questions designed to reinforce the pre-reading of the learning materials.
- Learning portfolios to evidence your learning. These would typically include: a study log; answers to self-assessment questions and / or small notes and critical reviews, identified queries to be raised with lecturers.
- Assignments - including essays, case studies, reports and designs.

Facilities
Two of the University's historic buildings - Newton and Arkwright - have recently undergone multimillion pound refurbishment and reopened in Spring 2010.
The buildings offer unrivalled learning facilities for students with many striking features including a new central court and link building, which will unite the Grade II* listed buildings. They provide an abundance of teaching space, a range of lecture theatres of different sizes, and masses of space for social learning.
The School has excellent lab and workshop resources for structural testing, materials science, and soils and building services.

Students from this course will graduate with improved professional and technical skills to operate at senior positions in the construction industry.
Although this course does not offer a formal placement, all our courses are vocationally focused and benefit from strong links with industry.
Entry requirements
A minimum 2.2 honours degree or a postgraduate diploma or equivalent in civil engineering or an appropriate built environment subject area.
We also welcome applications for this course from applicants with non-standard qualifications who have substantial experience in civil engineering and/or the built environment which demonstrates appropriate knowledge and skills at honours degree level; the University will assess candidates of this nature on an individual basis. Candidates with unconventional qualifications may be invited for interview.

Pre-sessional English courses
We offer Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (PEAP) courses from six to 30 weeks for students who need help achieving these requirements. Even if you have already met the minimum entry requirements you could still benefit, as many students do, from the study skills and orientation to the UK education system that is offered by a short PEAP course.

In-sessional English language support
In-sessional English language support classes are available to all international (non-EU) students studying on degree courses at NTU. There is no extra charge for these classes.
