Course content
This internationally recognised qualification focuses on the function and fundamentals of marketing to give you the knowledge and practical skills needed to plan and execute tactical marketing activities. It will help you gain credibility within your organisation and help you advance your career.
Modules:
- Marketing Essentials
- Assessing the Marketing Environment
- Marketing Information and Research
- Stakeholder Marketing.
Assessment
There is a combination of module assessment methods including formal examinations (one to be a pre-seen case study) and written assignments. One assignment will be a research-based paper, and the other will be a work-based project, so that participants can begin applying their new marketing knowledge to their own business.
How do you study?
Modules are delivered on a part-time basis. Two modules are undertaken per period (Sept-Jan and Feb-June). The course will run two nights per week with one session per week dedicated to each of the modules studied during that period. Study methods will consist of a combination of lectures, small-group work, problem-solving exercises, videos and case studies. In addition, individual tutorial guidance will be provided on assessment preparation.
Skill development
On successful completion of the course participants can expect to be able to:
- understand the fundamentals of marketing
- understand the different ways to communicate with customers
- understand your own organisation's marketing environment
- apply practical knowledge such as budgeting and understanding data.
Professional development
Students who successfully complete the Professional Certificate in Marketing can go on to study for the Professional Diploma in Marketing (CIM), also offered by Nottingham Business School.

In an increasingly crowded workplace, the practical nature of this course will help to differentiate you from other applicants, and will act as a significant signal to employers that you are serious about marketing and demonstrate that you have the skills and techniques needed to devise and execute tactical marketing activities.
This course does not currently offer placements however assignments give students the opportunity to base findings and give recommendations within their own company.
Entry requirements:
You will need one of the following:
- Bachelors or Masters degree
- Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Introductory Certificate in Marketing (Level Two or Three)
- NVQ or SVQ Level Three (equivalent to National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level Three)
- NVQ or SVQ Level Four in any other subject (UK – equivalent to NQF Level Four and above)
- Business or marketing experience would be an advantage.
