Bryan Saunders
Striker, sweeper, winger or keeper - the range of roles occupied by players on the pitch each have their own distinctive physical requirements and demands. As an expert in football performance analysis, Bryan has been carrying out important research as part of his PhD, examining the work-rate and performance characteristics of individuals on the football pitch. Using GPS technology, he has been able to map and monitor their movements, resulting in a detailed understanding of sprint profiles.
His data will be used in the development of tailored training regimes for players occupying different positions. Bryan will be presenting an abstract of his work Sprint Profiles in Soccer’ at the World Science and Soccer Conference in Port Elizabeth, South Africa between 8 and 9 June – just two days before the opening of the 2010 World Cup.
Dr Caroline Sunderland
Every World Cup competition presents different challenges for different teams to overcome – not least the effects on players from changes in climate and temperature. Caroline has spent a number of years examining the effects of these changes on elite athletes, as well as techniques and adaptations for acclimation and thermoregulation.
Her work also focuses on the physical demands presented by high intensity sport as well as recovery patterns.
