Study trips and fieldwork

Get out of the classroom and into the real world!

We firmly believe that experience gained in the field is extremely beneficial in teaching and learning, building confidence, and gaining the vital experience employers are looking for.

All of the courses taught in the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences offer a range of compulsory or optional study trips in the UK or abroad. From visiting a potential employer to sediment analysis in a river valley – there are plenty of opportunities to study in the field.

The cost and assessment involved in study trips varies. Some study trips will be included in your fees, whereas others will represent an extra cost on an optional basis. Ask your programme leader about study trips for your course.

Example study trips…

Mauritius
Undergraduate students from the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences undertake research on an optional study trip with staff from the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and Mauritius Wildlife Foundation (MWF). Students work on an annual project monitoring the impact of the reintroduced Telfair's Skink on the invasive Giant African Land Snail.

South East Spain
Geography students in the second year of their degree have the opportunity to take a residential fieldtrip in Spain exploring issues of dryland landscapes, land management and EU policy.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show
Our horticulture team visit or exhibit at the flower and garden design shows in the UK during the spring / summer terms. NTU won a Gold Award at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2008 with a student and staff designed garden.

An animal science student trip focusing on in-situ animal behaviour and welfare, alongside the opportunity to study more exotic species housed at Edinburgh Zoo. Previous students have gone on to research projects including the behavioural impact on re-homing a captive polar bear.
